His Majesty the Sultan - may God preserve and protect him - has been keen since assuming the reins of power in the country on January 11, 2020 AD to take care of His Majesty's armed forces in order to ensure that they continue to perform their sacred duties with high combat efficiency according to a rule that depends in the first place on building the human being and qualifying him optimally to perform the role assigned to him In these forces that have been restructured according to contemporary modern foundations, development and modernization have become a goal that was planned according to strategic and national foundations and constants to keep pace with the requirements of the third millennium and the challenges of the twenty-first century in order to achieve growth and prosperity for the good of the nation and the citizen based on its slogan that will never deviate from it (faith in God Loyalty to the Sultan, defending the homeland) which made it today one of the main pillars in the majestic construction of the modern Omani renaissance, as it was achieved for its three branches (the Royal Army of Oman, the Royal Omani Air Force, the Royal Omani Navy, in addition to the Royal GuardOmani), during the course of the modern Omani renaissance, many achievements are made in various aspects of armament, training, organizational, modern technology, and manpower development.
The Sultan’s Armed Forces were reorganized in 1987, the position of Chief of Defense Staff was changed to the position of Chief of Staff of the Sultan’s Armed Forces, and in the same year the rank of Minister was created in the organization of the Ministry of Defense, in a consensual step with other state ministries. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said - may God rest his soul - kept the position of Minister of Defense, while the position (created at the time) was called Minister of State for Defense Affairs, then this organization followed another change two years later, replacing the position of Minister of State for Defense Affairs in January 1989 with the name Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense with the rank of Minister.
In October 1996, the position of Deputy Prime Minister for Security and Defense Affairs was abolished, and a new position was created in November of the same year, which is the Minister Responsible for Defense Affairs, and the position of Secretary General at the Ministry of Defense was abolished and replaced by the position of Under Secretary of Defense, and on January 16, 2014, the position of Secretary General was reinstated. At the Ministry of Defense again, and on March 9, 2020 AD, the position of Minister Responsible for Defense Affairs was canceled to replace it with the position of Deputy Prime Minister for Defense Affairs, and is currently occupied by His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said.
